On April 27, 2013 SPUR Winnipeg presents a conversation on the politics of food with PEN Canada board member Sarah Elton.
Is the new wave of eating locally produced foods a healthy way of reining in food-greed and building sustainability, or a myopic and indulgent trend?
Authors Sarah Elton and Pierre Desrochers — equally passionate about the subject, but from divergent views — vigorously debate the questions surrounding the environmentally and socially responsible production, distribution and consumption of food. Moderated by Bartley Kives of the Winnipeg Free Press.
Sarah Elton is the author Consumed: Sustainable Food for a Finite Planet and Locavore: From Farmers’ Fields to Rooftop Gardens—How Canadians Are Changing the Way We Eat, which was an instant national bestseller and won gold at the Canadian Culinary Book Awards. She is the food columnist for CBC Radio’s Here & Now and writes regularly about food for TheAtlantic.com, The Globe and Mail and Maclean’s.
Pierre Desrochers is Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Toronto. His main research interests are economic development, technical innovation, business-environment interactions and energy policy and food policy.
Bartley Kives writes about urban affairs, wilderness travel, food and sustainability in the capacity of reporter-at-large for the Winnipeg Free Press. He’s also the author of A Daytripper’s Guide to Manitoba: Exploring Canada’s Undiscovered Province, a best-selling travel guidebook. His work has also appeared on CityTv, CBC Radio and in publications such as explore, National Geographic Traveler and Western Living.
