PEN Canada, Victoria University, and the Jackman Humanities Institute (JHI) are pleased to invite applications for our Exiled Writer-in-Residence position for the 2026-2027 academic year (September 2026-April 2027). The Exiled Writer-in-Residence will work with students, faculty and staff to deliver presentations and facilitate conversations on freedom of expression and humanistic exchange beyond borders. The successful candidate will be based out of the JHI and serve as a guest speaker in Victoria University classes.
About the role
In consultation with faculty and staff at Victoria University and the JHI, the Writer-in-Residence will:
- develop a targeted plan for interacting with students, faculty, and staff throughout the academic year
- create and deliver presentations, workshops, collaborative sessions, and other innovative ways of connecting with the community
- participate in academic and cultural events sponsored by Victoria University and the JHI
- maintain an active presence on campus
The Exiled Writer-in-Residence will receive a stipend of $4,000 per month for eight months (September to April) and will be provided with office space at the Jackman Humanities Institute.
How to Apply
Applications consist of the following:
- a letter of interest (approx. 500 words) describing how they satisfy the criteria and how their experience and current writing project inform their approach to the role. Preference may be given to candidates capable of addressing the JHI’s annual theme of “Doubles and Doppelgangers,” as described on the Institute’s website.
- a current résumé (including publication history, awards, teaching experience, and residencies, as applicable)
- a writing sample (5–10 pages)
- a 2–3 minute video introducing yourself and your ideas for engaging the university community
