A new national festival of politics, art and ideas

PEN Canada partners with the Literary Review of Canada and Diaspora Dialogues to launch Spur, a new national festival of politics, art and ideas in Toronto and Winnipeg this April

Spur n. anything that urges on (Canadian Dictionary).

PEN Canada is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Literary Review of Canada and Diaspora Dialogues at the launch of Canada’s first national festival of politics, art and ideas this April. The Spur Festival will present an eclectic mix of events, debates, musical performances, panels, walking tours and more. Spur launches in Toronto and rolls out editions in Winnipeg and Vancouver later in the spring. The national festival invites Canadians to have fun with some of today’s most provocative writers, journalists, entrepreneurs, activists and politicians.

Spur Toronto’s “The Bottom Line: the Intersection of Cash, Civics and Culture” will take place in central downtown, April 11-14.

Spur Winnipeg’s “Unnatural History: The Past, Present and Future of our Human-Made World” will be held April 26-28.

The events and program for Spur Vancouver’s “Global Power Play: The rise, fall and reimagination of societies” are scheduled for June 17-19.

For Spur Toronto, PEN Canada will be co-hosting events at the Toronto Reference Library on both the opening and closing nights of the festival. On Friday, April 11, Paul Holdengräber of the New York Public Library and LibriVox founder Hugh McGuire will discuss The Future of the Book, and on Sunday, April 14, we present Hendrik Hertzberg of The New Yorker and award-winning author Chrystia Freeland in conversation on Vested Interests in Politics.

On Saturday, April 27, at Spur Winnipeg, PEN Canada board member Sarah Elton will discuss and read from her new book, Consumed: Sustainable Food for a Finite Planet. Later that night, she will also take part in a panel concerning The Politics of Food.
