PEN Canada welcomes the release of Vietnamese blogger Dieu Cay

PEN Canada welcomes the release of Vietnamese blogger Nguyễn Văn Hải, widely known by his pen name “Dieu Cay,” who has been jailed since April 2008.

Dieu Cay received PEN Canada’s One Humanity Award last year, in recognition of his pioneering work in Vietnam, using online networks to expose corruption and human rights violations.

“As we celebrate Mr. Hải’s freedom,” said Tasleem Thawar, Executive Director of PEN Canada, “we should also recall that at least 17 other journalists, most of them bloggers, are still languishing in Vietnam’s jails. We renew our calls for the government of Vietnam to release anyone who has been imprisoned for the peaceful expression of their opinions.”

On arriving at Los Angeles airport, where he was greeted by a crowd of supporters, Mr Hải said “The best message to all political prisoners who are still behind the Communists’ bars is: ‘Have faith, you are not alone’.”

PEN Canada is a nonpartisan organization of writers that works with others to defend freedom of expression as a basic human right at home and abroad. PEN Canada promotes literature, fights censorship, helps free persecuted writers from prison, and assists writers living in exile in Canada. PEN Canada is the Canadian centre of PEN International, a community of writers that operates on five continents with 148 centres in over 100 countries.
