On December 1st, PEN Canada members and friends marked Giving Tuesday, a day where charities, companies and individuals rally around important causes. This year, PEN supporters came together to build an emergency fund persecuted writers. We raised $6,070 – a huge accomplishment. Many thanks to all who donated and helped to spread the word!
In the short-term, these funds will be used to help seven writers-in-peril as they navigate the refugee claims process in Canada. In the future, they will help persecuted writers flee violence, settle in safe countries, and receive medical care related to persecution.
PEN staff were blown away by the support the emergency fund initiative received from members, friends, and the literary and human rights communities. We even made the Festival of Literary Diversity’s (FOLD) list of six campaigns to support! Scroll down to read tweets from some of the amazing people who shared this initiative with their networks. Once again, THANK YOU to all who took action for writers-in-peril.
We’re still aiming to build the fund to $10,000 by the end of the year. If you missed Giving Tuesday, it’s not too late to donate!
