Like many of you, I was profoundly saddened by news of Ellen Seligman’s passing on March 25, 2016. She was one of the greatest editors in Canadian literary history and also an unshakable supporter of PEN Canada, serving as its president from 2009-2011. As our leader, she ensured the organization’s very existence at a period when it was in doubt. In fact, PEN Canada thrives today because she devoted some of her considerable boldness, conviction, and brilliance to us. For that, everyone involved with PEN Canada – past, present, and future – owes Ellen a great debt. You can read testimonials to her life and work and crucial contributions to PEN from past presidents in Ellen Seligman: In Tribute.
Ellen’s family has invited donations to PEN Canada, in her memory. The funds will be used to honour Ellen and her contributions to Canadian writing and freedom of expression in a permanent way. Further details to be shared in the near future.
