Taking to the Streets for Pussy Riot and Liu Xiaobo

What: On PEN International’s 31st Day of the Imprisoned Writer, the Toronto public is invited to show its support for authors jailed for exercising our universal right to freedom of expression.

Teams of PEN Canada volunteers will take to the streets of Toronto and invite pedestrians to be photographed holding images of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot, and jailed Nobel Peace Laureate Liu Xiaobo.

These images will be posted online as a gesture of support for the jailed writers. The public will also be asked to write the relevant authorities calling for the writers’ immediate and unconditional release.

Where:

Liu Xiaobo: corner of Spadina & Sullivan (3 blocks N of Queen/Spadina)

Pussy Riot: corner of Queen Street & Soho (2 blocks E of Queen/Spadina)

When: Thursday, November 15, 2012: 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Background: On PEN International’s 30th Annual Day of the Imprisoned Writer, November 15, 2011, PEN Canada took photographs of the public supporting Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh and the Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak. The photos can be viewed here.
